Josh Powell has been scrutinised all over the media for the past two years as well as being hammered by the police, judges, prosecutors as well as social workers after the death of his wife (Susan Powell) who disappeared in 2009. Powell set fire to his home on Sunday killing himself and two young sons, after leaving a message to his attorney stating “I’m sorry, goodbye”.
The explosion murder-suicide happened only a few days after Powell was denied custody and had to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation.
The young boys that were murdered in this suicide were with a social worker on Sunday just hours before the explosion. As soon as the kids were brought back with the social worker, what was supposed to be a supervised visit was forgotten when the young lady had to rush out for something before Powell locked her out.
At this point the social worker stated that she could smell gas and reported it to the supervisors straight away, moments later the Powell home started bursting into flames. Committing suicide and burning his two younger kids too.
Sgt. Ed Troyer believes that Powell used some sort of flame accelerant to make the home burn even faster than usual. Investigations showed that certain e-mails that were sent from Powell’s computer seems to prove that he actually planned the suicide-murder fire.
At 7th December 2009, Susan Powell, 28, was reported missing as she failed to show up at work in the morning in Utah. Josh Powell quickly became the number one person of interest for this case. Powell, however, repeatedly denied any sort of involvement in the disappearance of his wife.
Powell told The Early Show of CBS in tears that he ”would never even hurt her,”.
“People who know me know that I could never hurt Susan,” he added.
The children spoke about the night their mother disappeared, although not 100% they stated “that Mommy was in the trunk. Mom and Dad got out of the car and Mom disappeared.”
Josh Powell’s brother-in-law Kirk Graves, 39, stated that said that they were stunned by the news. “We never contemplated the idea he would do something like this. You just don’t expect it from a father,” he said. “His world was falling apart around him and he was going to lose his boys and get arrested for Susan’s disappearance. He’s a narcissist and he has no love for anyone but himself.”
All in all, no matter how psychologically messed up you are, it takes a monster to kill those two innocent kids with himself.
